Choose Lisbon for the widest flight network and trips beginning in the capital, Sintra or the Alentejo. Choose Porto for Porto, the Douro and northern Portugal. Choose Faro when the Algarve is the principal destination and the flight schedule fits. Arrange the first ground transfer before departure when arriving late, carrying substantial luggage, travelling with children or staying outside a city centre.

Choose the arrival airport first
Compare the complete journey to the first hotel—not only the transatlantic fare. An open-jaw flight can remove a day of backtracking.
Match transport to the traveller
Metro and train can be excellent with light luggage. A prearranged transfer earns its price when access, timing or comfort is the real constraint.
Protect the arrival day
Leave margin after an overnight flight. The first prepaid visit should not depend on a perfect immigration queue or baggage delivery.
The arrival should support the itinerary—not dictate it.
A lower airfare can become the expensive choice after an unnecessary domestic flight, private transfer or extra hotel night. Price the full route, including the return journey, before committing to a conventional round trip.
Portugal is compact, but airports sit within very different travel geographies. Starting in the right one creates more time for the places you crossed the Atlantic to experience.
